Beam weapons are considered the most balanced weapons in terms of attributes. boasting a decent range, accuracy, rate of fire and damage, they can quickly turn the tide in battles if commanders aren't prepared or under-estimate the weapon type.

Beam weapons are split into 2 types, each with two different paths (Higher accuracy at the cost of damage, or vice versa) so you can customise your weapons needs slightly to your fleet. Beams are also relitively cheap to research, making them even better as a solid weapons platform.

Second generation beam:

This beam is purely to unlock the advanced tier of beam research. However please note you dont have to have a basic beam at lv5 in order to undertake this research. So long has you have the required cosments and research total you can unlock it at any time.

The stats it provides are a modest increase over even tier 4 basic beams, however the advanced special ability comes into play, adding +10 range on top (making it 70) and unlocking the tier6 ~ tier8 beams for later research

Slaughter beam (2nd generation attack beams):

These beams follow on from the same design as assault beams did. Slightly increased damage for slightly less accuracy but this time they have 10 extra range thanks to being 2nd generation, allowing you to attack even sooner.

Particle beam (2nd generation accuracy beams):

These beams follow on from their focus beams counterpart, sacrificing a small amount of attack for higher accuracy. Again, thanks to being 2nd generation, they attack 10 range sooner aswell. However they are slightly more expensive to devlop then slaughter beams.

Sensitive beam (Alien-tech):

Very high attack and very high accuracy, however they double the targets beam resist when they strike. if they have 45 it will double to 90, meaning instead of doing 55% damage it will do 10%. However the increased damage and accuracy works wonders with the skill piercing fire, which reduces the targets resistance to zero, so the sensitive beam has nothing to double and does full damage. At higher levels they do not get +10 range like their normal research counterparts, leading to potentially having to survive a volley before returning fire, leading to another disadvantage.
